This paper examines the dominant frameworks in which Asian-Canadian women have been conceptualized. It proceeds by analyzing three bodies of academic inquiry: immigration and settlement studies and ethnic studies; Asian Canadian studies; and Asia Pacific studies. I foreground these bodies of work since they highlight the ways in which Asian/Canadian women have been represented: as migrant and ethnic women negotiating processes of dislocation, settlement and integration; racialized minorities that are a part of and arguably entitled to western space; and as women whose labor builds and yet are marginal to, Asian economies and global capital. Drawing on a transnational feminist analytic, I argue that rather than viewing Asian/Canadian women as either dislocated migrants, racialized minorities, or marginal representatives of Asian economies, a relational, intersectional and historically specific analytic is required. This would account for how Asian/Canadian women are multiply-positioned within processes of globalization and white settler nationalism. | |
