In this book the author Temma Kaplan portrays movements of women and young people in different parts of the world namely in Argentina, Chile and Spain. Most of the movements that are being examined in this book are movements of the Left. These include opponents of the Chilean regime of Pinochet, including Mujeres Por La Vida (Women for Life) and Agrupación de Familiares de Detenidos Desaparecidos (Association of Family Members of Disappeared Detainee); the Madres de Plaza de Mayo in Argentina, the group that led the resistance to the Argentinian Junta; women's and youth movements in both Chile and Argentina that struggled to keep alive the memory of repression and human rights violations even after formal democracy was restored; and groups that struggled for democracy in Spain, both during and after the rule of Francisco Franco. At the heart of Kaplan's book we find the mobilization of women and young people whose struggle, according to the author, proves that the political process is not limited to the highest political echelons and that societies can protect themselves by mobilizing in the streets not only against government abuses but also against state terrorism. | |
