LGBTIQ-Communities im globalen Norden kennen „Reisewarnungen“ nicht erst seit Covid-19 – z.B. für die Karibik. Urlaube dort gelten als gefährlich. In den karibischen Staaten selbst entwickelt sich immer mehr Widerstand gegen solche Ansichten, die ja vor allem ignorieren, wie viele LGBTIQ-Spaces hier seit Ende des Kolonialismus schon erkämpft worden sind. Die Herausgeber_innen des Sammelbandes „Beyond Homophobia“ zitieren dazu einen Aktivisten aus Trinidad: LGBTIQ-Menschen in der Karibik seien Handelnde ihrer eigenen Geschichte und nicht Objekte von (homophoben) Umständen und dürften nicht länger „Gefangene der Narrative anderer“ sein. Dem Buch ist anzumerken, dass es auf zwei großen Konferenzen zum Thema beruht, wo Aktivist_innen, Künstler_innen und Akademiker_innen eine LGBTIQ-Zukunft jenseits von Angst, Gewalt und eben diesen Narrativen entworfen haben: 2015 und 2017 an der University of the West Indies – und zwar am Campus Jamaica, in jenem Staat also, der in westlichen Medien auch schon als „the most homophobic place on earth“ bezeichnet wurde.
