| This collection of essays germinated in innumerable late-night sessions, found expression in women's causus panels and informal get-togethers at sociology and political science meetings, and was brought to fruition by social scientists who exitedly discovered a mutual interest in an area long neglected by mainstream scholarchip. These meetings and exchanges of view began as early as 1971 and were culminated at a symposium sponsored jointly by the Center for the Study of Democratic Institutions and the University of California, Santa Barbara. On March 6-7, 1974, twenty-five participants from the United States, Canada, Western Europe, China, and the Middle East joined with Center fellows in a dialogue entitled "Social and Political Chance: The Role of Women." The papers presented by the conferees constitute the core of this book. | |
