Beschreibung:
Issue 66 highlights that culture is superimposed on many aspects that deal with women's rights, even in contexts that one would not expect the culture discourse to be prominent in. Contributors unanimously raise attitudes towards women and girls as being a grave concern, and debate culture with relation to gender and inequality. Contributors are Jude Clark (Gender, culture and constructions of transition in South Africa), Fiona Scorgie (The prohibition of virginity testing in the Childrens Bill), Nompumelelo Zondi (Critiquing the male writing of female izibonga), Sarah N. Ssali (Gender, culture and privatised health care in Uganda), Natasha Maria Gordon-Chipembere (The misreading of Sarah Baartmans life by African America writers), Janet Hinson Shope (Rural black women and the contradictory meanings of lobolo in post-apartheid South Africa), Lydia Mugambe (Rethinking culture in the face of HIV/AIDS in East Africa), Johan Smuts (Independent women and male dependency in a white working-class suburb of Pretoria), Nolutho Ndengane Diko (Case study of a rural co-educational high school in the Eastern Cape), Sara Compion and Susan E. Cook (Young women of Phokeng: strategies for survival in contemporary South Africa), Gabisile Nkosi (Celebrating the spirit), Kristin Palitza (Culture (ab)used to dodge womens rights), M. Bahati Kuumba (African women, resistance cultures and cultural resistances), Konjit Kifetew (Gender and cross cultural dynamics in Ethiopia) etc.
